What happens in IPD if you never betray, is: you lose. Now, as a gamer, maybe you've heard of the Prisoner's Dilemma (PD from now on)? Have you also heard of game theory related to so called iterated PD (IPD)? Right? It's another of those, 'it's not the tool, it's how it's used' kind of thing like fear, like weapons, like all technology since men controlled fire and banging rocks together. Just because children use it over peanuts, does not invalidate its logic over actual life or death matters. Not new philosophy in any way Saint Augustine I believe. I will just mention, 'they started it' is still one of the most basic justifications of war. Of course we are merely talking about ideological conflict, but then, the mechanics are similar whether the game is themed as WW2, zombies, or ponies right?

I would bet you are perfectly ok with rapists being conditioned to fear raping, due to the consequences they would suffer from doing it. And you know what? I think you know it too. But I do believe a blind atempt to eliminate fear, and consequence, from society is usually counterproductive and therefore tragically immoral. But why exclude a perfectly suitable mechanism for learning behavior from the toolbox? Fear (and pain) work, albeit neither universally, nor absolutely. The world will always be a harmful and scary place. Here's a thought: The world is a scary and harmful place.
